Burping on command

Why I can’t burp on command? I swallow air and inhale air but I barely do only short and tiny burps. Everytime I inhale or swallow air, I feel like my body say to me “No, that goes to lungs, not in stomach”. Is this a genetical thing or something? I mean, many of my friend did it since the first time they tried as kids and I’m in my late 20s now and still can’t do it…

To swallow or inhale air into the stomach instead of the lungs, you have to actively control a part of your throat (the epiglottis) that you don’t naturally have conscious control of. So this requires learning to control a new muscle, which can take a lot of focus and effort. Add to that and you have to recreate the right conditions for the air to suck in (creating a negative pressure in your abdomen by using your diaphragm and intercostal (rib muscles)). If you learn as a little kid, it’s much easier than learning as a teen (like I did) or then as an adult. But it doesn’t mean you can’t. I’d suggest searching through the forum for a few of the different topics that talk about this, concentrating on one that makes sense to you, and copy a video online of someone doing it until something starts to happen. You’ll need to be persistent and practice a lot! But it’s so worth it. I learnt when I was 15 and haven’t looked back.
