Manly Burps

I got told by a guy that I have “manly burps” but what does that mean?

I think that by saying “manly” people associate the burp to the classic masculine man stereotype. In my mind a “manly” burp would be particularly deep and/or long.
That being said I do think that this adjective can be quite inappropriate as many in this community know that people can burp in a variety of ways independently by their gender and/or appearence.
So yeah, I think that is what the guy was trying to say but I still think we should stop using that word in our community.

Yeah I get it alot and it is strange. I get called a man alot because of it

I feel like some burps have a deeper more manly tone than others. Oddly enough,me,as a man get told by others with the fetish that my burps sound feminine

I think that, at the end of the day, no matter how perceptive of social standards, people (myself included) are still in some ways tied to binarity and the human-made concepts of masculinity/feminility.

With that, people who hear a burp that’s deep, long, “strong”-sounding, etc, might associate it with the concept of manliness and use “manly” as a general way to define it (since ideas like strength and virility are socially linked to that concept). On the other hand, burps that are smaller, less deep and/or high-pitched, more silent and “delicate”-sounding might be associated with the social concept of feminility.

I see it as a simplistic way to describe a burp when the person can’t (or doesn’t want to) use more specific words to qualify it (specially cuz I don’t think it’s something in people’s minds, the best way to describe a burp), but I think it’s important to avoid using “genderfying” words and find different words that are more concrete as to how a burp sounds (and to qualify things in general). This way you don’t run the risk of misgendering someone nor using stereotypical words.
