Advice for burping on command?

For some reason I cannot grasp the concept of swallowing air and then immediately pushing it back up.

But if I ever learn I’m going to have a field day

Sometimes the sucking in way works too

I had some trouble with it too. What finally helped me out was actually feeling my upper throat with my hands as I took a drink, and then using that to help pinpoint the right throat muscles to engage. At least for me, actually swallowing down air is a much different mechanism than the normal way I swallow, so people telling me to “just swallow air” didn’t really help much.

I actually figured it out by accident when I was trying to figure out how to do that trick where people are able to just open their throat and pour beer down without even swallowing. Was never able to get that tho :stuck_out_tongue:

I would guess different tips help different people, but these are some I can think of that would of helped me in hindsight, I couldn’t burp at all or on command till about 12 years old. Up to you, but I would wait on worrying how soon the air comes out, I’d first focus on getting air into you and then worry how fast you can get it back out.

  • If you can burp off of carbonated beverage naturally already, try doing your swallowing or inhale attempts after a burp comes out. I find colder drinks restrict my airway which is great for making loud burps, but I feel if that happens to you it could be tougher to learn so try different temp beverages.

  • For air swallowing try with your chin downwards and neck slightly straight, and feel what happens with your throat when you just swallow naturally. For me my neck muscles on the front feel almost the same while swallowing air, but I have to use some extra force in the area behind in my neck behind my tongue. At least for me, you never end up swallowing like you do with saliva/drink/etc, so if that is happening you’ll have to keep trying to vary this technique for what works.

  • Inhale method I feel works better with your head and neck leaning forward while looking forward. When getting the hiccups that little area of skin at the bottom of your neck and the center of your collarbone may slightly pull in becoming concave, for me it’s this motion of the neck and throat I work off of to do inhales. Before air starts making its way into your neck or stomach you shouldn’t be breathing in, keep using the same motion that makes that area of the neck move in a little harder until a little bit of air moves in. From there you can do several little inhales like that to make a burp, and develop into a nice steady stream of air coming in as an inhale.

I hope any of this helps, I’ve never tried to explain how to burp on command, let me know if anything is unclear. And with everything, some things come instant for people and others have to work on it. Never get discouraged and keep on trying :slightly_smiling_face:
