Game theory: sharing videos vs hoarding

This thread is about sharing videos vs hoarding and the consequences of having many people who don’t share their finds in order to trade them at a later point (or for any other reason).

If everyone stopped sharing their finds and kept their videos close to the chest, we’d all have less videos at our disposal.

On the other hand, when a person hoards videos, they end up with more bargaining chips for future trades in case other people do the same. Can we really blame them for doing something that’s more beneficial to them?

For the sake of simplicity, let’s take away the creep factor and assume the videos in question are older videos whose creators stopped making new content.

Is there an optimal balance between sharing and gatekeeping, or is all gatekeeping selfish by definition?

To be honest I probably have a shit ton of content that isn’t accessible anymore but that’s just because I hoard them by nature. I’m more so too lazy to share anything either. The thought doesn’t really cross my mind. If I see something I like, I save it or clip it and store it and that’s been the case for the past 7-8 years.

Yeah, I get it that some people are passive for other reasons other than trading. I added “(or for any other reason)” to the start, but yeah this was largely about people who hoard with trading in mind.

It’s also interesting to consider what would happen if more people were this sort of passive, though. the consequences would be similar.

Btw, this thread isn’t meant to judge anyone, just to try and think what this community would be like if a higher percentage of people made the same choices. It reminded me of a game from some game show called “split or steal” (although here it’s not really splitting and definitely not stealing either, just a conscious choice that affects the other person).

I don’t mind sharing my finds… but I personally hate when I get zero likes and zero comments, when posting something. It makes me want to cease sharing so much. I’ve always been like that, not only on the forums, but on Facebook and other social media also. Like for example, I share a funny azz meme on FB and nobody comments or likes, I just stop. Maybe that’s not the way to be, maybe it is, it’s just how I am lol
