Moderator changes

I’m happy to improve categorising. On the old site there was one massive thread that people posted absolutely everything into. One of the objectives when we moved to discourse was to split things up a bit more. I get that it might seem messy though, I guess it’s about finding a balance.

I honestly think the opposite would be preferable. Like meaningless bumps suck but I’d rather have long running threads than a lot of new threads covering old topics

I think merging threads pretty aggressively on aggregate does a lot more good than bad.

I think labeling content would also help a lot. Ideally, every content post would include the name of the creator and when there are enough in a misc/platform-focused thread, they’d all be moved to a seperate thread for the creator to avoid cluttering. But that would make it easier to search for stuff

the issue is we have basically have two types of threads, ones that are too broad to be useful or be too specific to be necessary past a couple posts. A lot of dead end threads and a lot of bottomless pit threads. I think content just need to have a place. And if there isn’t a place appropriate for it, that’s when a thread like “random media” should be used.

I think there are far too many threads about specific individuals cluttering up things. I get there are some people that consistently provide content or something relevant but I think we could do with less “Has insert random TikTok or Twitch user ever burped in a stream?” type threads.

I think a generalized streamer request thread is a fantastic idea honestly probably will get more traction than threads named after someone many of us have never heard of

Do you always have to bitch at everything?

@TheTraveler I wish you good luck on your mod adventures!

hope this doesn’t sound too much like I’m vague posting about another thread, but since we’re talking about moderation in general, I don’t really see why we ever need to close a thread. Like if discussion isn’t happening, who cares? If it is, why not let it keep happening until it reaches its conclusion? And if people are engaging in ways that violate forum policy, discipline them rather than stopping discussion. I don’t know. Always struck me as very paternalistic. The bad kind of moderation. (I think deleting old controversial threads (admittedly a rare practice) is even worse)

No problem! And I apologize

I didn’t even see the ai chat discussion until now, I take back my apology

The last sentence showcases rhetoric I find abhorrent.

If AI ethics is something we wish to bring up in consideration, hoping to implement changes, then it should be its own topic in Site Feedback. Clogging other threads with this discourse only serves to divide and obfuscate everyone’s emotions and ambitions.

A lot of online forums and spaces are banning AI content. I don’t think it would be unreasonable to ban them here given that this is an intrinsically human space, even if not always a humane one…

I was shocked to see the badge suddenly behind TheTraveler’s name also. While I think he more often than not makes good contributions to the forum, I can’t help but feel like there are now two Qs moderating. It would be nice to have a mod that had more diversity in thought. But yes, I would have expected a thread announcing the new mod and giving some background on them as a member/insight into the rationale behind the promotion.

On those sites there’s a reason for the ban though, that they’re pretending to be human to game some kind of system. But there’s nothing to gain here by spamming AI, and if someone does or posts it in the wrong threads, we’ll clean it up.

Mods do have to kind of be on the same page though otherwise there wouldn’t be very consistent moderation.

sorry to bring discussion back to this post (and the original topic), but this is a weird thing to say, right? I’d totally understand if TheTraveler had been posting really valuable stuff in the fart section that I’d missed because I don’t go there, but if you click the link, that’s not what this is. Traveler posted three times in that thread, mostly just to identify what he’s done on a prior fart-focused site. Maybe Q is using that thread to represent how valuable TheTraveler’s contributions were to that site, but it’s hard to look at just the thread Q linked and imagine that it justifies making someone a moderator. IDK. just an odd choice. Also to have to go back to a thread active last fall to justify a choice being made now. And nobody seemed to really make note of it. I don’t want to sound like I have a vendetta against Traveler or anything (he seems to really dislike me but I’m neutral/lukewarm on him generally) but from his brief posting history I’ve seen, this choice seems really weird. And I disagree with his moderation choices so far. See what I said in another thread:

These thoughts are all in different threads or have gotten moved all over the place at this point, but I agree with what you (and some others) have been saying. This is odd timing with the AI thread, odd moderation, and disappointing for the future of the forum. Perhaps I am just out of touch with how this community operates now, but this choice of moderator just seems out of left field enough for me to question what the actual reasoning is.

Not that I have to defend my position, but I’d like to say that I support @TheTraveler not because they are a friend but because I don’t give a damn about who is moderating so long as they are listening to the community. I do believe he listens and I do know that he has been around the forums longer than he appears (multiple accounts).

Nonetheless, I also support this poll and think it would be a better way to come to community consensus in the future. It might be useful to inform the community of the poll via the General Chat. Get some good ole fashioned democracy going (She ain’t dead yet!).
