Spiritual/Healing Burps

I think this is an underexplored element of humans’ relationship to burping. This thread is not to share videos of spiritual healers burping, but rather to discuss this phenomenon in a curious and respectful way. I just stumbled on this video, which taught me that the practice of a healer burping is also present in African spirituality. I knew that this was also a practice in southeast Asia, and it’s so interesting that it appears in other cultures’ practice as well. The woman in the video I linked explains that healers burp to indicate that the healer is in the presence of ancestral spirits, as a means of communications across physical and spiritual realms. Whereas, in southeast Asian practices, it seems like the burping expels negative energy or spirits within the person being healed.

I’m just curious if anyone has found any sources on this practice/has any thoughts to share about it

i started seeing a sports massage therapist who was very, very rough and was trained in all these traditional massage practices (which, if you didn’t know, relies on a bunch of Asian and African ideas of energy and life and in the body, where the traps and blocks are, etc) and he told me from the very beginning it was going to be equal parts relaxing and holy-shit-i-want-to-die-this-hurts-so-bad.

halfway through the session he made a joke about burping and farting and said plainly that he didn’t care if I did, and that he would be surprised if i didn’t because the other athletes do all the time. i didn’t, but it did get me thinking. partially because the idea of it was hot but mostly because i was wondering what the connection was between freed energy and belching. isn’t a good percentage of the fetish related to relief? that’s definitely it for me, the idea that a fat belch just feels good, therefore the person’s going to do it even at the cost of politeness.

just spitballing. can’t go far enough to say that spirits are belching through me like i’m Avatar Aang or something but i understand how the ancients could see a relationship between digestive relief and energy release

I found a good (and recent) article on the subject

Incredible, thank you. I find it comforting and fascinating that others out there have, throughout time, invested burping with significance and positivity, even if this significance isn’t necessarily sexual. Sometimes I just enjoy appreciating burps for what they bring to the body, soul, and life.

This is a very intriguing subject. I’ll have to give that read, thanks.

This, and farting, are quite common in ayahuasca ritual healing, as far as I have experienced. It’s an interesting reframing of gas for sure. We have a diverse relationship with our bodies worldwide, I guess.

I was hoping for a more in depth read or maybe some sources. Bummer.

You could always search “spiritual burping” like I did
