Apologies if this isn’t entirely relevant and if my topic is too political but I wanted to get some of your opinions because of the current climate.
This is not unique to Tik Tok, social media is rife with this but I’m making Tik Tok the topic of discussion here. Tik Tok is a treasure chest of content for us and reminds me of the old days of YouTube but it’s also one of the biggest cesspools of humanity I’ve ever seen. Naturally I’ll scroll through my recommended feeds and while burp videos will come up, it’s impossible to not come across a video from woke idiots who hate me or people like me for simply existing. I’m probably giving this way too much thought but I wish Tik Tok only recommended videos similar to the channels I follow.
Be curious to know how you guys navigate this or how you don’t let it affect you.
Yeh I have a love hate relationship with tik tok, it’s great for finding burps and because of the competition to get likes and followers there is endless conveyor belt of new material. However it comes at a price as scrolling/looking for material i will come across a lot of stuff which is not relevant to what I am looking for or the people I follow and I see so many things from the ridicolous to the superficial and I hate it as it subconsciously effects and alters your emotions.
No that’s valid. Nobody likes receiving excessive shame or demonization for things they have no control over. Also, it’s impossible to just “ignore” the messages that you receive from social media. On some level, no matter how hard you try, they will affect you.
I agree that TikTok is terrible but not quite for the same reason. I don’t think it is bad to be exposed to other opinions. It would be good if people were more civil and respectful of each other as human beings, but escaping into an echo chamber of only our own opinions is not the answer, in fact that’s the very thing that has created (or at least contributed) to the raving thoughtless political fanaticism that you’re referring to.
TikTok is bad because it encourages groupthink…all social media does imo. I find TikTok’s tactics to be incredibly concerning and it’s a scary new height for social media. For one, the whole thing is based on repetition. Endless repetition. I’ve found myself thinking of popular sounds that I heard on TikTok at random times throughout the day and I’m like get the fuck out of my head. Imagine if that was political propaganda (it often is). Now the app looks pretty Orwellian. Also, the infinite generation of videos is incredibly unhealthy. Human beings are not meant for infinite content like that. We need to take a break, be with our own thoughts, not to be pleased every single second. In that sense, TikTok is like Huxley’s Brave New World (in addition to Orwell’s 1984). It’s even more concerning to me that TikTok originated in a totalitarian state. Repetition, constant stimulation, insane capacity for information harvesting… these are classic mind control tactics people. I’m actually so freaked out about this app that I deleted my account even though it’s where 99% of the good content is these days.
The stuff that shows up in your recommended feed is usually stuff that you interacted with in one way or another, by reacting to it, commenting on it or simply watching it to the end. If you limit your interactions with these types of posts, less of them will appear in your feeds over time.
However, since political content is by nature divisive and these platforms are built in such a way as to make user interactions more likely by any possible means, chances are that you’re still going to see at least some posts like that.
If they are that annoying to you, I’d recommend either limiting the time you spend on social media or learning to ignore them.
I rarely reply to dumb shit I see online these days and avoid getting into pointless and time wasting arguments with random people on the internet. So far it has been a great choice for my overall mental health.
I appreciate all your responses guys, it’s reassuring to see that people like the ones I’ve described are merely a vocal minority and most people regardless of their race or political disposition, are willing to engage in civil discourse.
You word this perfectly. I have thought and tried to delete my account for the same reasons. I am thinking I should just go for it and be disciplined. You are right though, all the content is there, and yet as an app it is very concerning…and well…alot of it is just awful as well.
Maybe I’m different, most of the stuff I see on my FYP is comedy videos, whatever challenge that is popular with women (silhouette challenge, Buss it challenge and down the line, the occasional burp video, but I don’t run into too many " I hate cis men" videos much or whatever topics you are alluding to.
But on the topic of this, I 've also have the issue of groupthink because generally, the messengers message usually gets blown way out of context by the audience on both sides. What could be a joke to the person who posted the video could also be the fuel to the fire to those who really believe the joke.
It was quite difficult but I am definitely glad I did it. What’s tough is that they leave your account available for 30 days after you “deactivate” it, so you have to last a month without logging on, lol. Bastards
adding on, I don’t like TikTok either. It’s just too toxic for me personally and I’ve felt much better after deleting the app a few months ago. Never looked for content on there, but from the comps I’ve seen here there must’ve been good burpers on there
I think it really depends on what you follow, like any social media. Most of my feed is zoo keeper/ aquarium animal videos and food recipes. Pretty far from toxic but I made sure to stay away from that kinda stuff.
As far as burps, I like it because it reminds me of the YouTube golden age that I grew up on. Generally I avoid the comments though
