This is a question that’s been on my mind for a while, I asked this once or twice online over the years but always on fart forums and never on a burp forum so I’d love to get your thoughts and perspective.
I’ve had a fart fetish for over 15 years now and only very recently discovered that I get turned on by burps too (albeit less than farts and I only enjoy female burps). For decades, I was largely grossed out by burps altogether and avoided watching any clips that included both burps and farts let alone only burps.
Obviously, when it comes to burping and bodily functions in general, guys will be guys but, as someone who for ages did not have a burp fetish, even I could notice the huge amount of videos online featuring sometimes very feminine and young girls casually burping and laughing hysterically about it, totally normalizing it as if they weren’t doing anything that at least conventionally would be considered gross and rude by many. Then there was (and still is) the sprite challenge which has become so popular that even two soccer players from my tiny country did it and posted it on TikTok a few years ago. It’s one thing to find this funny if you’re a girl, it’s another to outright do it and post it on social media where anyone can watch it including their coaches, friends and family members but also random strangers. Then there’s the Kids Choice Awards with their burp zone. Then there’s the various TV shows where female celebrities burped randomly without any shame and sometimes explicitly came on a show to have a burp contest like Rowland and Berrymore a few years ago. You will never see anything that comes even remotely close to all of this when it comes to farting. And finally, from a purely anecdotal perspective, in my 30 years of life I have heard several different girls burp in various settings but on the other hand I can count on one hand the amount of girls I’ve heard fart (no more than 3 and always accidentally).
Why is that? The smell argument doesn’t work because both farts and burps can smell bad. Why are farts so frowned upon especially by women yet burps often get a free pass and are very normalized?
the first thing that comes to mind is normal distribution (the Gauss thing). in theory, the spectrum for both goes from fetish to total disgust. and since the fart fetish is more widely spread, than the burp fetish; so I assume, that the curve for farts is flatter, and the burp curve is more vertical. Therefore, more people find farting disgusting (and more disgusting), than burping.
For Example: If you measure the iq of people, many will be average, and few will be extremely above or extremely below average. This applies to anything, the rating of a movie, human height or or birth weight. If the curve is flatter, there are more people on both extremes, high and low.
(It’s btw the same with iq if you compare male to female. There are more men than women at the high end. But also more men than women at the low end)
The mouth vs asshole thing sums it up pretty well. Also farts tend to smell much worse. The worst smelling burp I have ever smelled has never even touched a modest fart.
Ok fair enough but what is it about burps that makes so many girls ok with burping openly, having contests, chugging carbonated drinks to induce burping etc.? Not to mention all the female celebrities burping in public and on TV.
also farts are a lot more noticeable and awkward than a burp. because it usually smells and causes discomfort from others, no one wants to admit when they farted, making it more of a taboo. if I was in a conversation with someone and they burped, assuming I wasn’t aroused by it, i could continue. if someone ripped ass, however, it would cause much more of an awkward moment. finally, burps are much easier to supress and stifle than farts.
I have weird mixed opinions on this. I definitely wouldn’t say burping is grosser because obviously shit and the butt, but in a way it’s more audacious at least if you’re comparing a loud belch to a garden variety fart. I think part of it is the way burping is more personified, the gas/sound coming out of the mouth is less disgusting but in a sense it is a more strange contrast.
I’ve always had a complex with burping even before I had the fetish. I’ll do small silent ones because I’m not an rcpd sufferer but I’ve never in my life let myself do a loud unsupressed burp, I was not a particularly neat or polite kid but for some reason as long as I can remember burping was just something unthinkable I wouldn’t allow myself to do even in private. this was also entirely self driven, my mom was frequently concerned I suffered stomachaches because I never burped and would encourage me to chug soda and drink baking soda to get one out.
I think it comes down to comfortness. I’ve heard so many girls burp whenever but not females fart whenever. I think if they think it’s funny, and have no shame, they don’t care what comes out either end. But I think statistically it’s more “appropriate” (and that term is being tossed very loosely) to burp in public than it is to fart in public. The demeanor of a fart is just not as socially acceptable than a burp is, and I’m sure it has to do with something in the past and it be decided if it was allowed or not. I also think the term “girls don’t fart” is more wide spread than “girls don’t burp” and that goes for the term “it’s not lady like”
Idk I could be ranting, but like I said most girls I’m around are comfortable to burp but only one have I ever met was comfortable to fart around me. But then again she’s went to pee with me on the phone and was in her underwear on the phone (both FaceTime) too so she’s loosely mannered in that sense
